Dixie Dandies jazz it up in Superior

by Bobbi Jo Bailey

The Mineral County Performing Arts Council (MCPAC) sponsored the Dixie Dandies from the Spokane Valley by having an ice cream social on the courthouse lawn on Sunday.

The jazzy music from the band filled Superior's streets. They played good old classics like Johnson, Sentimental Journey, and Bye Bye Blackbird. Some people couldn't stand it anymore so they got up, grabbed a partner and danced to the music.

Volunteers from MCCAP were serving chocolate and vanilla ice cream and water, all of which was twenty-five cents each. Patrons would put their money into the donation jar and maybe a little extra for the band. The people who were serving the ice cream --Denley Loge and Carroll Billadeau -- said that they served more than two hundred cones! The crowd sure kept them busy!

The crowd tapped their feet, laughed, sang along, and had a great time. Some of the songs the band could not remember, but they did their best and made it sound good.

Rosie, from Rosie's Café had a birthday coming up. Even though it was next weekend they had her come up as they sang "Happy Birthday".

Bruce Davis sang his heart out as the lead singer and trombone player of the Dixieland band.

"I don't think that we've ever had as many song requests," he said before they began to play again after a break.

The crowd certainly took up the opportunity to request songs for them to play. It seemed as if the crowd just couldn't get enough. Keith LaMatte, who is the trumpet player, ended up singing Georgia on my Mind. After he sang the song he looked at the crowd and said: "You have witnessed my first and last solo. It was very uncomfortable singing up there for the first time."

One of his favorite songs to listen to and play is, "Spring can really hang you up the most". Isn't that the truth?

Dick Hubbard really got down with his saxophone and clarinet. He looked like he was at home up there playing. Kyle Pugh said that his favorite song to listen to is In the Mood and that his favorite song to play with the band is Chattanooga shoe shine boy, which was recorded fifty years ago. Kyle was in many different bands before he became part of the Dixieland band. One of the bands he was in called themselves Many Sound Nine. Wendell Smith was the guitar player in the band. He sat back, played his guitar and had a great time.

The band had a sub drummer by the name of Brett Depew. He teaches kids how to play the drums and subs for other bands. He was subbing for Marve Richter who was out of town during the occasion.

They are going to try to make this concert a yearly thing. They enjoyed playing for Mineral County and apparently, Mineral County enjoyed listening.
