'Good Neighbor Handbook' available to rural landowners

Missoula County’s Open Lands Citizen Advisory Committee proudly announces The Good Neighbor Handbook: Information for Rural Landowners in Missoula County. This new publication is a compilation of resources, tips, technical information, and ideas for rural landowners in Missoula County, and free copies are currently available.

The handbook features photos of western Missoula County, including the Frenchtown area and Petty Creek, and prominently quotes Petty Creek resident Doug McCoy.

McCoy emphasizes the purpose of the book as he states, "I feel it is a privilege to live in the Petty Creek area. I try to repay this privilege by respecting the history, the people, the wildlife, and the open lands that are all part of these beautiful valleys and mountains."
The handbook encourages stewardship of the land and offers tips and resources for landowners in their efforts to maintain healthy vegetation on their land, enjoy living among wildlife without conflicts, understand the working landscapes of Missoula County, and more. The Open Lands Citizen Advisory Committee hopes that the Good Neighbor Handbook can help support and inform land stewardship efforts throughout the county.

“Rural living comes with many benefits, as well as a responsibility to be good stewards of the land and good neighbors to each other,” writes the committee in the handbook’s Introduction. “While landowner tasks can seem numerous--treating weeds, preparing for wildfire season, bear-proofing storage and garbage--the rewards are far greater. The results of landowners taking pride in these commitments are evident throughout Missoula County: productive working lands, strong communities, and abundant natural resources.”

Printed handbooks are available at the Rural Initiatives office located at 317 Woody Street in downtown Missoula, and Missoula County residents are encouraged to pick up copies for themselves, neighbors and friends. The handbook can also be viewed online: http://www.co.missoula.mt.us/rural .
