St. Regis to receive stimulus funding
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has chosen the St. Regis Wastewater Project for low interest loans and funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The funds will be used for construction of a maintenance and storage building on site near the existing control building. Having a secure location for maintenance should insure equipment remains in proper working conditions or are out of commission for as short of time as possible.
St. Regis officials and their engineer, Morrison Maierle Inc., have worked with the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) and the DEQ to pull together funding for the project. The funding source is the DEQ's Water Pollution Control State Revolving Fund, which will provide a total loan of $103,100. This loan consists of $103,100 of ARRA funds with $53,700 in principal forgiveness and $49,400 at 1.75 percent. The project has been awarded and construction will begin this spring once the ground is favorable for construction activity.
Through the State Revolving Fund programs, the DEQ and the DNRC work together to loan money to public entities across the state, helping communities and organizations undertake a variety of water quality improvement projects. The DEQ oversees implementation of each project, while the DNRC administers the loan. The agencies award about $20 million to $40 million each year. The loan programs are supported in part by annual grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
