Judy Stang announces for HD 14
by John Q. Murray
Judy Stang announced that she will run in 2010 for House District 14. Stang, a Democrat, served as a Mineral County commissioner for 18 years, from 1991 through 2008.
Rep. Gordon Hendrick (R-Superior) announced that he will not run for a fourth term in 2010.
House District 14 includes Frenchtown and western Missoula County, a small sliver of southeast Sanders County, and all of Mineral County.
As a commissioner, Stang served on the public lands, tax, and subdivision committees for the Montana Association of Counties, testifying before the legislature on many occasions. She also developed expertise on workforce issues while serving on the board of the Human Resources Council. She has experience with small business in the family grocery business and in real estate.
Stang, who attended the St. Regis schools, said she has a love of public service and that she is always available to listen and to help solve problems.
She is the first Democrat to throw her hat into the ring, after three Republicans announced their intentions to run for county offices. Ernie Ornelas said he will run for County Sheriff to succeed Hugh Hopwood (R-Superior), who will be retiring. Roman Zylawy will run for the East District seat on the Board of County Commissioners, and Marcia Verley Boris will run for County Attorney.
Organizers of a Mineral County Constitution Party also announced after the 2008 elections that they would run candidates for office.
