Frenchtown Library to host One Book Montana event Oct. 22

by Joyce Doyle

Imagine all the people across our state sharing an experience, talking with one another, and becoming closer. That’s "One Book Montana."

Since 2003, Humanities Montana has invited residents to read and discuss the same book. This year’s selection, “The Surrounded,” by D’Arcy McNickel, is set on the Flathead Reservation where the mixed-race protagonist explores cultural differences and conflict. McNickel grew up in the Mission Valley and is recognized for laying the groundwork for modern Indian literature and Native American studies.

The library and branches plan a series of book discussions and panel talk to coincide with the Montana Festival of the Book. Come to one or all of the following:

Saturday, Oct. 17, 11 a.m. “The Surrounded” book discussion at the Seeley Lake Branch, Seeley-Swan High School.

Wednesday, Oct. 21, 7 p.m. “The (Mis)Education of Archilde Leon: The Legacy of Indian Boarding Schools.” Panelists from the UM Law School, Missoula Indian Center, and others will discuss the impact that government- and church-run boarding schools had on Native American families and communities in the early to mid-1900s.

Thursday, Oct. 22, 5:30 p.m. “The Surrounded” book discussion at the Frenchtown Branch, Frenchtown High School.

Saturday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m. “The Surrounded” book discussion at the main library with Dorothea Susag, author of “Roots and Branches: A Resource of Native American Literature,” as well as several Indian Education for All lesson plans for the Office of Public Instruction.

Copies of “The Surrounded” are now available for checkout at the main library and branches; just ask at the Accounts desk. Missoula Public Library’s One Book Montana programs are co-sponsored by OPI and the Friends of the Library. Copies of the book are on loan from Humanities Montana.
