Hunter education class in Frenchtown this September

by Vivaca Crowser

A Hunter Education class is planned for Frenchtown in September with registration slated for Aug. 31.

Classes are Friday, Sept. 18 and Friday, Sept. 25 from 6-9 p.m. with a field course on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9-11 a.m. This course has less required in-class time than some hunter education classes, and because of this it requires some home-study work.

To register, interested students should go to the Frenchtown Fire Hall Administration Building, 16875 Marion St., at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31. A parent or legal guardian must accompany students under 18 to register. The class is limited to 30 students, and registration is open until the class fills.

All hunter education classes are free of charge and students must be at least 11 years old to be certified. By state law, anyone born after January 1, 1985, must have completed the Hunter Education Course to buy a hunting license in Montana. The minimum age for hunting in Montana is 12.

Hunter education classes will also be held in Missoula in September. For a listing of these and other hunter education classes in west-central Montana, visit the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) Web site at fwp.mt.gov and follow links to “Education” and “Hunter Education.” For more information, contact FWP at (406) 542-5518.
