Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels in the Frenchtown area. Open routes are available the second and fourth Friday of each month. Drivers pick up hot meals at the Providence Center in Missoula, but do not have to return to Missoula after delivery. The delivery hotbox and bags may stay with the driver until their next scheduled route. Mileage reimbursement is available. If interested in delivering Meals on Wheels to your neighbors in the Frenchtown area, please contact Curtis at Missoula Aging Services at 728-7682. The Bitterroot Resource Conservation and Development group meets every first Monday from 10 a.m. to noon in the County Commissioner's Office in Superior. The Ninemile Wildlife Workgroup meets the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m., at the Ninemile Ranger Station's Visitor Center. Residents of Ninemile, Sixmile, Huson and Petty Creek are especially welcome to join us in our efforts to maintain the historic and regionally important Ninemile Wildlife Corridor which overlays these areas. The Frenchtown Library will host a discussion of the classic Harper Lee novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" from Feb. 8-13, and as part of the celebration, the Missoula Public Library will start giving away 300 free copies Jan. 12. The goal is to encourage the reading of a classic piece while sharing a communal experience and starting dialogues on the novel’s timeless themes. Many other events are planned for February, including a screening of the film, discussions of the author Harper Lee, and three lectures by nationally-acclaimed expert Claudia Durst Johnson. The Montana Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) will award two Montana students a $500 scholarship to assist with their post-secondary education. The deadline is Feb. 17, 2009. Students must submit an original 3-5-page essay describing how your education and experiences have given you the opportunity to explore natural resource conservation, and how you plan to impact natural resource conservation in the future. The Mineral County Friends of the Library welcomes new members to help support the county library system. Formed in 2001, our raffles, bake sales, coffee rest stops, and chili “read and feeds” have raised hundreds of dollars to support the library’s limited budget.
