Frenchtown Community Church will be holding its annual Clothes Closet on Friday, Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 9 a.m. to 12. Clothing for the family, free to anyone in need. Donations of clothing items clean and good repair are also excepted and appreciated and can be dropped off at the church or by calling 626-5558.
Applicants are sought to serve the remainder of Tom Mahlum's term on the Frenchtown Rural Fire District Board of Trustees, through May 2009. The Plum Creek land agreement will be the subject of a public meeting Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m.in the Mineral County Commissioners meeting room in Superior. Presenters from the Trust for Public Lands and the Nature Conservancy will address issues surrounding the sale of 42,000 acres of Plum Creek lands in Mineral County (and 320,000 total acres in Western Montana). They will discuss funding, access, management objectives, and what will change as a result of this agreement. We urge you to attend and invite your friends and neighbors who may be interested in this landmark decision. There may well be tremendous opportunities in this proposal so it behooves us to become well acquainted with the project so we can offer up ideas that will benefit all residents of the county. The Disabled American Veterans Volunteer Transportation Network serving veterans in Sanders County, has enlarged its service area. Drivers are needed in the Plains area to answer the increased workload. A valid Montana driver's license and proof of current insurance is all that is required to be a volunteer. Superior Public Schools offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast costs $1.30, lunch costs $1.90 (K-6), and $2.00 (7-12). Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals. Reduced-price is $.30 for breakfast, $.40 for lunch. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, use a Free and Reduced-Price School Meals Application which will be sent home with your child the first day of school. Return the completed application to the school.
Join folks from the Great Burn Study Group for weekend trips into the Great Burn this summer, monitoring weeds, wildlife, trail conditions, signs, and more, collecting important information for management of this rugged backcountry area. Mountain lion hunters must choose to apply by Aug. 29 for a special license drawing or purchase a general license by Aug. 31. Apply for the special license drawing over the counter at any FWP Regional office by 5 p.m. on Aug. 29; online at fwp.mt.gov by 11:45 p.m. MDT, Aug. 31; or by mail to: Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, License Section, PO Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620. Applications must be received by Aug. 29. Hunters are urged to check the mountain lion regulations.
The Bitterroot Resource Conservation and Development group usually meets every first Monday from 10 a.m. to noon in the County Commissioner’s Office in Superior. There will be no RC&D meeting for Mineral County in September. Please mark your calendars for the next meeting to be held Oct. 15. All the superintendents from the schools will be invited to give us an update on the schools. By having the meeting on the 15th instead of the usual first Monday, the Superintendents will have time to put their enrollment figures together for the State of Schools report.
The Ninemile Wildlife Workgroup meets the first Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m., at the Ninemile Ranger Station's Visitor Center. Residents of Ninemile, Sixmile, Huson and Petty Creek are especially welcome to join us in our efforts to maintain the historic and regionally important Ninemile Wildlife Corridor which overlays these areas.
