Sheriff's Report for June 19, 2008

Sunday, May 25, 7:19 p.m. The Mineral County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a break-in at a home in Saltese. The sheriff’s office said that they have a list of items stolen in the break-in.


Monday, May 26, 4:56 p.m. A 44-year-old Superior resident – who had been reported missing by a family friend a couple of weeks earlier – was arrested for shoplifting. A clerk working at the Town Pump in Superior called the sheriff’s office to report that a man was stealing beer from a cooler in the store. The sheriff’s office apprehended the man with the stolen alcohol.

Tuesday, May 27, 12:02 a.m. A Superior resident called the sheriff’s office to report that their home had been broken into. Though nothing was stolen, the front door of the Diamond Road residence was kicked in. An investigation is underway.

Tuesday, 2:37 p.m. A 27- year-old man and 33-year-old woman, both of St. Regis, were arrested for possession of dangerous drugs following a meeting with the man’s probation officer. When arriving at the home, the man was given a urinalysis and tested positive for methamphetamine use. When questioned, the 33-year-old woman admitted that she had meth in her purse, and the couple was arrested.

Tuesday, 6:58 p.m. A Superior resident called the sheriff’s office to report that the front door was open at a home that was supposed to be empty. The sheriff’s office responded, found that the home had been rented out to a new tenant and no further action was taken.

Wednesday, May 28, 2:25 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a call from a gas station in St. Regis reporting a fuel run-off, the alleged gas bandit making off with $75. When the sheriff’s office found the driver of the car, the driver presented a receipt for the fuel to prove their innocence. Mineral County Sheriff Hugh Hopwood says: Make sure to get your gas receipt any time you buy gas, especially if you use a credit/debit card at the pump. If a mix-up occurs, the receipt will clear up any confusion.

Wednesday, 8:26 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a call from the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department advising the Mineral County agency to be on the lookout for a car with a woman and three children possibly heading west on Interstate 90. The alert went out after a woman in Missoula called the Missoula authorities stating that three small children came up to her and told her that they were being taken from their mother and would never see her again. Both the sheriff’s office and the Montana Highway Patrol looked for the vehicle, but it was never spotted in Mineral County.

Friday, May 30, 11:07 p.m. An Alberton resident called the sheriff’s office to report that a woman was walking around in the area and seemed to be disoriented. The sheriff’s office found the woman, who was drunk, and told her to go home.

Saturday, May 31, 2:35 p.m. A St. Regis-area convince store called to report a fuel run-off , the gas bandit making off with $1.22 (not a typo). There were a number of fuel run-offs in the area over the past three weeks, perhaps none stranger than this one.

Saturday, 10:29 p.m. A person in St. Regis called the sheriff’s office to report that they had returned to their car and found one of the vehicle’s windows broken out. There are no suspects in the vandalism, although an investigation is underway.

Sunday, June 1, 5:46 p.m. The MHP attempted to pull over a vehicle on westbound I-90 and the driver continued to drive, ignoring the MHP trooper’s sirens. When the man from Chicago finally stopped, he told the trooper that he was trying to find Gallatin County. The 25-year-old man from New York State was arrested for attempting to elude a police officer.

Sunday, 10:46 p.m. A 23-year-old male and a 20-year-old female were both arrested in St. Regis after the sheriff’s office attempted to serve a protection order. When the sheriff’s office came to the couple’s home, a deputy smelled burnt marijuana. The man was arrested for violating a portion of his probation that said he was not to use drugs or alcohol, and the woman was cited for minor in possession.

Wednesday, June 4, 1:19 a.m. A St. Regis man called the sheriff’s office to report that a bear in the area was getting into his sealed garbage can.

Wednesday, 7:18 a.m. A Missouri resident staying in Mineral County called the sheriff’s office to report that another Superior resident was continually calling and harassing him. The sheriff’s office contacted the harasser and informed them that if the calls didn’t stop, they would be cited for violating the Privacy of Communications act.

Thursday, June 3, 7:16 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a call reporting that a group of youths were stacking the picnic tables on top of each other at Superior’s Timberman Park. The sheriff’s office responded to the scene, but the youths were gone.

Friday, June 4, 7:33 p.m. A Superior resident called the sheriff’s office to report that the diamond in her wedding ring had fallen out somewhere in the area.

Friday, 10:17 p.m. The sheriff’s office received an anonymous call that a keg party was taking place in the Fish Creek area. Upon arrival, the sheriff’s deputies found around 100 youths at the event and gave so many breath tests that they ran out of tubes for the breath test machine. At least seven youths were cited for MIP.

Monday, June 7, 1:15 p.m. The sheriff’s office received a call of some damage to a storage unit in the Alberton area. Nothing was stolen from the storage unit and an investigation is underway.

Monday, 10:03 p.m. A 20- year-old man living in Alberton was arrested by the sheriff’s office on a warrant out of New York.

Tuesday, June 8, 1:23 a.m. A 21-year-old St. Regis woman was arrested for DUI after being pulled over for speeding on I-135. A 20-year-old male, a passenger in the car, was cited for MIP. The woman gave a BAC of .088 while the male gave a BAC of .068. In the process of integrating interrogating the two people, the deputy noticed that the two were trying to conceal something. Further investigation revealed that they had stolen some small lapel-type pins from a local store and both were arrested and charged with theft.

Wednesday, June 9, 9:17 a.m. The sheriff’s office received a call from a company doing work in Mineral County reporting that a trailer was stolen from their work site. An investigation is underway.

Wednesday, 9:23 a.m.The sheriff’s office received a call from a Superior resident reporting that a neighbor was dumping garbage into their trash can, a theft of services. An investigation is underway.

Wednesday, June 11, 1:58 p.m. A Haugan resident called the sheriff’s office to report criminal mischief in the area. The caller said that they felt that a member of their family had borrowed an ATV and done some damage to it, but wanted it noted that there might have been a theft of the vehicle.

Friday, June 13, 10:32 p.m. Four MIPs and one arrest followed a keg party in the Superior area near Fourth Street and Riverside. When the sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, they noticed a teenage female vomiting in the front yard of the residence and a bunch of juveniles trying to flee the scene. A 21- year-old male was arrested for giving false information to a police officer.
