Glenn Green and Ray Winn held the lead for two positions on the Frenchtown Fire board of trustees late Tuesday night.
In results released at 9:30 p.m., elections officials gave Green 566 votes, Winn 518 votes, Dee Woods 281 votes and Harry R Kenck 261 votes. There was also one vote for a write-in candidate.
Those totals did not change over the next two hours, as officials reported that they were counting absentee and write-in ballots. The Chronicle called every 20 minutes over the next few hours, but no updated totals were made available. Officials stopped answering the phone at about 11 p.m.
The vote counts suggested a slightly higher turnout than the 2007 trustee election, which drew a total of 519 votes. In that race, four candidates vied for one position, which was won by Mitchell Hicks.
This year, the differences among the four candidates were clear-cut. The top two issues appeared to involve impact fees and residential fire sprinklers.
Green and Winn opposed impact fees, while Harry Kenck and incumbent Dee Woods supported them. A proposal before Missoula County would charge an impact fee of about $2,000 for each new single-family home in the district to pay for the increased costs of fire protection associated with growth.
.
Green and Winn also opposed Fire Chief Scott Waldron for defining a limited number of options to meet water supply requirements for new construction; one option involved installing residential sprinklers. Green and Winn said fire districts should not be involved with building codes for new construction, while Woods and Kenck applauded Waldron's leadership.
