The third annual reading challenge for students in the elementary grades was a great success again this year with 65 percent of the K–6 students completing the reading challenge.

The Mayor’s Award (a smart looking pin) went to those students who read between 250 and 449 minutes during the challenge. The Governor’s Award, for those reading between 450 and 719 minutes, included the Mayor’s pin and a model airplane arfectionally named the“Governor’s Glider;” and the Presidential Award, for those who read 720 minutes or more, included the “President’s Cup in addition to the other awards.

Alec Managhan topped all of the readers by reading a total 4800 minutes during the time period – earning the coveted position of George Washington during the awards ceremony.

Jack Neis, with 3570 words, served as President Lincoln; Ryan Vicek, with 2330 words, was President Jefferson, and an Honorable Mention went to Delani Hanley with a total of 2215 words.

For their outstanding accomplishments the Presidents were given Hats, Caps, a President’s Cup, a Governor’s Glider and Mayor’s pin; along with flowers and another pin.

The Cat in The Hat (AKA Gloria Curdy) was on hand again this year to provide a little spice to the event – and to draw names for the two bikes and a $25.00 Barnes and Nobel Gift Certificate that were awarded to three lucky students who completed the reading challenge.

The bikes were donated by Mineral County Masonic Lodge, and the Gift Certificate was donated by Barnes & Nobel and The Alberton School Library. Shawn McGowan’s name was the first to be drawn for one of the shiny new bikes – with Savannah Thompson receiving the second bike and Aspen Bunton the Barnes and Nobel Gift Certificate.

This year, along with the Cat in the Hat, Mrs Lincoln (AKA Ceil Barr), Martha Washington (AKA Alberton School Librarian Linda Gardner), and Alberton Town Librarian Danna Fitzwilliams were on hand to help distribute the awards.

The elementary teachers were recognized for their service by being given a Mayor’s Pin, a President’s Cup, flowers, and Posters – with the teachers, whose students served as the three presidents, awarded a Governor’s Glider and Snoopy Candy in addition to the other awards. The top two readers from each grade level all took home some Snoopy Candy along with the other accolades they received for their reading efforts.
